Fortune Eupatorium Herb, with the pharmaceutical Latin name EUPATORII HERBA, is the dried aerial part of Eupatorium fortunei Turcz., a plant belonging to the Asteraceae family. This herbaceous plant, emitting an elegant fragrance, holds a long-standing position in the system of traditional Chinese medicine. Since its inclusion in the Shennong's Classic of Materia Medica, it has been classified as a top-grade herb, renowned as the "finest of fragrant herbs." Its name, "Pei Lan", originates from the ancient practice of wearing it on the body to ward off foulness and dispel pathogens, as recorded in the Chu Ci (Songs of the South): "I braid autumn orchids to wear as a pendant." Fortune Eupatorium Herb is neutral in nature, pungent in taste, and acts on the spleen, stomach, and lung meridians. II. Authentic Production Area:

China's Yunnan, Anhui, and Hubei provinces are the traditional genuine producing areas of Indian Bread. Among these, the "Yun Ling" produced in Lijiang, Yunnan, and the "An Ling" produced in Anqing, Anhui, as well as the Dabie Mountain area of Huanggang, Hubei, are the most renowned for their quality. Only premium-quality Fortune Eupatorium Herb can be used as the raw material for our adaptogen bath bags. The unique natural conditions of these regions, combined with scientific cultivation management, collectively contribute to its excellent medicinal properties:

1.Scientific Adaptation to Geography and Climate: Fortune Eupatorium Herb thrives in warm, humid climates, tolerates shade, and is sensitive to drought. The genuine production areas are mostly located in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River plain and hilly regions, with an average annual temperature of 15-18°C, annual precipitation of 1000-1400 mm, and relatively high air humidity. Loose, fertile, well-drained sandy loam soil is most suitable for its root development and the growth of its aerial parts. Adequate moisture and moderate sunlight facilitate the synthesis and accumulation of active components such as volatile oils and thymol derivatives in the stems and leaves.

2.Meticulous Management in Ecological Cultivation:

"Wide Ridge, Dense Planting" Cultivation Model: Production areas mostly adopt a wide ridge planting method with ridges 80-100 cm wide and furrows 20-30 cm deep, ensuring both good drainage and ease of field operations. Reasonable dense planting (30 × 40 cm spacing) maximizes the utilization of light energy while maintaining field ventilation and reducing the occurrence of diseases.

Scientific Water and Fertilizer Regulation: Fortune Eupatorium Herb prefers fertile soil. Production areas promote the principle of "sufficient base fertilizer, multiple topdressings." Base fertilizer primarily consists of decomposed organic fertilizer (2000-2500 kg per mu), combined with superphosphate; nitrogen fertilizer is applied 2-3 times during the growth period to promote lush stem and leaf growth; phosphorus and potassium fertilizers are supplemented before flowering to increase the volatile oil content.

Timely Harvesting and Stubble Regeneration: Fortune Eupatorium Herb can be harvested twice a year. The first harvest takes place from late July to early August during the plant's budding stage, when the volatile oil content is at its highest; the second harvest occurs in mid-to-late October before Frost's Descent. A stubble height of 5-10 cm is left during harvesting to facilitate regeneration. Modern research confirms that the volatile oil content in Fortune Eupatorium Herb harvested during the budding stage is over 20% higher than during the flowering stage. Therefore, we also harvest Fortune Eupatorium Herb during its budding stage for making herbal bath bags.

"Aroma-Preserving" Techniques in Harvesting and Processing: After harvesting, impurities are promptly removed, and the herb is spread out to dry in the sun or placed in a well-ventilated area to dry in the shade. Traditionally, "shade drying" is emphasized over sun exposure to prevent the loss of volatile components. Modern processes employ "low-temperature (≤40°C) circulating air drying technology," achieving uniform dehydration in a closed environment to maximally preserve the elegant natural aroma and heat-sensitive active components of Fortune Eupatorium Herb.

III. Quality

High-quality Fortune Eupatorium Herb: The stem is cylindrical with few branches, the surface is yellowish-brown or yellowish-green, with distinct nodes and longitudinal ridges. The leaves are opposite, mostly wrinkled, crumpled, or broken. When whole leaves are flattened out, they are three-lobed or unlobed, with serrated margins. The overall material is dry, clean, and free of impurities. The stem is brittle and easily broken, with a fibrous, yellowish-white cross-section. The upper surface of the leaves is yellowish-green, while the lower surface is lighter in color. The overall color is vibrant and natural. The aroma is rich, elegant, and long-lasting, becoming more pronounced after rubbing, possessing the characteristic pure fragrance of Fortune Eupatorium Herb without any off-odor. When soaked in hot water, the liquid turns a light yellowish-green, remains clear and bright, and the aroma is released. When tasted, it is slightly pungent and cool.

Ordinary/Inferior Fortune Eupatorium Herb: The stems and branches are thin and weak, with excessively long internodes. The leaves are sparse or severely fallen off. The color is dull and grayish. It is often mixed with impurities such as sediment and weeds. The appearance is dull (dark brown or grayish-yellow), or excessively bright green (suspected of being dyed). The texture is dry and brittle, or damp and sticky to the touch. The aroma is weak, or there may be a musty, sour (sulfur-fumigated), or smoky odor. Rubbing produces little to no aroma. After soaking, the liquid may be turbid or show an abnormal color. When tasted, it is bland or has a bitter, astringent flavor.

IV. Main Chemical Components

1.Volatile Oil Complex: This constitutes the core active component of Fortune Eupatorium Herb and is the source of its elegant fragrance. Various volatile substances can be extracted using steam distillation. The volatile oil serves as the primary material basis for the antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and summer-heat relieving effects of Fortune Eupatorium Herb.

2.Thymol Derivatives: These are among the characteristic active components of Fortune Eupatorium Herb, including derivatives such as 9-hydroxythymol, 8,9-dihydroxythymol, and 8-hydroxythymol. These compounds possess biological activities like anti-oxidation and anti-inflammation, closely related to its efficacy of "resolving dampness and harmonizing the middle."

3.Terpenoids: These include sesquiterpenoids (such as clovane-2β,9α-diol and caryolane-1β,9β-diol) and steroids, which have synergistic effects like anti-inflammation and immune regulation.

4.Flavonoids: The total flavonoid content in Fortune Eupatorium Herb can reach up to 32.35 mg/g. These are primarily flavonoids, which have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and vascular protective effects.

V. Core Efficacy

Fortune Eupatorium Herb is neutral in nature, pungent in taste, and acts on the spleen, stomach, and lung meridians. Its core efficacies are "aromatically resolving dampness, awakening the spleen and opening the stomach, and releasing the exterior to relieve summer-heat." Its qi is clear and aromatic, adept at penetrating dampness and resolving turbidity, earning it the reputation as the "essential herb for treating damp-warm diseases." When used externally in the form of a "medicated bath bag," its aromatic nature can leverage the warmth of the water, utilizing the dual pathways of skin absorption and steam inhalation to exert its unique effects of "resolving dampness and eliminating foulness, and relaxing the sinews and activating the collaterals":

Resolving Dampness and Eliminating Foulness, Improving Eczema and Itching:

It has a good effect on eczema, skin itching, prickly heat, and summer dermatitis caused by dampness-turbidity obstructing the skin, capable of "eliminating stagnant qi and removing filth and odor." Its volatile oils and thymol components are fully released in hot water. Through transdermal absorption, they can gently percolate and resolve dampness retained within the skin tissues. Modern research confirms that Fortune Eupatorium Herb has bactericidal and bacteriostatic effects. For eczema patients (often considered by TCM to be related to spleen deficiency with dampness accumulation), a medicated bath with Fortune Eupatorium Herb can assist in dispelling dampness and relieving itching, reducing exudation. Since ancient times, there have been records of "bathing in fragrant Eupatorium decoction," where a decoction of Fortune Eupatorium Herb was used for bathing to dispel disease and eliminate filth.

Eliminating Foulness and Resolving Turbidity, Alleviating Summer-Damp Discomfort:

It has a good regulating effect on head distension, chest tightness, mental fatigue, and poor appetite caused by summer-damp encumbering the middle jiao. During bathing, the elegant, volatile aromatic molecules of Fortune Eupatorium Herb are inhaled through the respiratory tract, directly acting on the central nervous system to quickly refresh the mind and alleviate fatigue. Simultaneously, its "dampness-resolving" components, absorbed transdermally, help dredge the qi mechanism obstructed by summer-damp, bringing a refreshing and relaxing sensation to both body and mind.

Expelling Wind and Relieving Itching, Supporting Skin Health:

It has an immediate itch-relieving effect for skin itching caused by mosquito bites. Rubbing the bitten area with the juice extracted from crushed Fortune Eupatorium Herb leaves can quickly stop the itching from mosquito bites. When used in a medicated bath, its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory active components gently cleanse the skin and inhibit harmful surface microorganisms. During the mosquito-prone summer season, a medicated bath with Fortune Eupatorium Herb can provide effective prevention and relief.

Relaxing Sinews and Activating Collaterals, Alleviating Heaviness and Stiffness of Limbs:

It offers auxiliary relief for limb soreness, heaviness, and joint stiffness caused by damp pathogens obstructing the meridians. The heat of the medicated bath synergizes with the dampness-resolving power of Fortune Eupatorium Herb, promoting systemic blood circulation and helping to eliminate dampness retained within the muscles and meridians, alleviating the sensation of heaviness in the limbs caused by damp encumbrance or fatigue. Studies have shown that soaking the feet with Fortune Eupatorium Herb can help relieve fatigue and promote blood circulation, making it suitable for individuals with heavy dampness or foot discomfort.
